We will begin our guided tour to four of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Kathmandu Durbar Square holds the historical palaces of the Kings who ruled over the then Kathmandu Kingdom. It is here that Kings of Nepal were crowned. We will also visit Hanuman Dhoka, the ancient royal residential quarter, Mahadev and Parvati Temple, Machhender Bahl – holy place for the Buddhists and Hindus, Temple House of Kumari, the vestal virgin or the living goddess. Walk around the local bazaar.

Pashupatinath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati River, the temple built in Pagoda Style has gilded roof and richly carved silver doors. Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingum, or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva. The Aryaghat alongside Pashupatinath temple and on the bank of the Bagmati River is a famous funeral site for the Hindus.

The Buddhists shrine of Bouddhanath is one of the oldest and largest stupas in the world. With an imposing structure standing some 36 meters, the Stupa stands on the massive three level mandala style Platforms surrounded by colourful private family houses. Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list this site is considered very much like Mecca for the Buddhists and every year tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the Himalayan region visit the stupa.

Swayambhunath Temple is popular among the foreigners as the Monkey Temple owing to the large number of monkey population residing in the area. This Buddhist Stupa is said to be 2000 years old. The Stupa which forms the main structure is composed of a solid hemisphere of brick and earth supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of Copper gilt. Painted on the four sided base of the spire are the all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. This hill is a mosaic of small Chaityas and Pagoda temples.

    Overnight in Kathmandu.

We start our tour of two more UNESCO World Heritage Site cities adjacent to Kathmandu: Patan & Bhaktapur. Patan is also known as The City of Fine Arts. Patan Durbar Square is one of the places in the Kathmandu Valley where the medieval arts and architecture still remain in its original state. The Durbar Square is full of ancient places, temples and shrines, noted for their exquisite carvings, mostly the Hindu and Buddhist monuments. Krishna temple, built in 1723, is the most important temple in Patan Durbar Square. The stone carvings along the beam above the first and second floor pillar is most notable. The first floor pillar carvings narrate the events of the Mahabharata, while on the second floor there are visual carvings from Ramayana. In Patan we will also visit the Golden Gate, the sky piercing temple of Teleju Bhawani, built by King Siddhi Narsing Malla in 1640, and the statue of Yogendra Malla, curio shops and bazaars. Patan Museum has an outstanding collection of cast bronze & gilt copper work of most of the Hindu & Buddhist deities.

After exploring Patan, we will move toward Bhaktapur, the Town of the Devotees. Bhaktapur too preserves medieval arts, architecture, culture, and lifestyle to this date. Bhaktapur main square, Durbar square, Palace of 55 Windows and the Nyatapola Temple built by King Bupatindra Malla are the main attraction of the area. The Nyatapola Temple is the best example of Pagoda style and stands on five terraces on each of which stands a pair of figures – two famous strong men, two elephants, two lions, two griffins and two goddesses.

A few kms away from Bhaktapurp, Changu Narayan Temple is located on a high hilltop. The temple is one of the oldest Hindu temples of the valley, and is believed to be constructed in the 4th century. Changu Narayan is the name of Vishnu, and the Temple is dedicated to him. A stone slab discovered in the vicinity of the temple dates to the 5th century, and is the oldest such stone inscription discovered in Nepal. It is listed as one of the world heritage site by UNESCO.
